Principal's Message

This has been quite the week for winter enthusiasts. I hope everyone has been staying warm and healthy as we approach February. I am certainly counting the days until longer and warmer days.

The Winter Olympics kicks off next week, and in the spirit of "Going for the Gold" we are launching a month-long initiative to recognize middle schoolers who give it their all. Beginning Monday, February 2nd, we will be celebrating all things R.O.A.R. — Respect, Ownership, Acceptance, and Resilience. Teachers will recognize students with GOLD tickets who are demonstrating these core values throughout the school day. When students receive a ticket, they should write their name on it and place it in the large raffle box during their lunch wave.

Each Friday, student names will be drawn, and winners will have the opportunity to choose a prize from the prize menu. This is a fun and meaningful way to highlight positive behavior, encourage student accountability, and strengthen our school community.

Save the Date: Screenagers February 24th

I am happy to share an opportunity with our community that is being offered in collaboration with South Windsor Youth and Family Services. Screenagers is a film that explores adolescent use of social media, video games, and the internet. We see the impact of increased use of technology every day at TEMS, and we appreciate the continued partnership with our families to make sure that our children use devices responsibly. We have worked with Y&FS and SWPD in the past to bring a screening of Screenagers and are happy to be offering this again this year. Click the flier below to register.

Entertainers Presents: Beetlejuice, Jr.

Join us for a frightfully funny stage extravaganza based on the beloved motion picture turned Broadway phenomenon.

Our talented middle school cast and hardworking crews bring Beetlejuice, Jr. to life on stage! This outlandish musical follows Lydia Deetz- a strange and unusual teenager, still grieving the loss of her mother and obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, she and her father move to a new house haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium. Filled with vibrant music, captivating storytelling, and stunning performances and behind-the-scenes efforts by over 100 of TE’s very own students, this is a show you won’t want to miss!

📅 Performance Dates:
📍 March 26, 27, & 28
🕖 Thursday & Friday at 7 PM
🕐 Saturday at 1 PM & 7 PM

Thank You to Our School Counselors

Monday, February 2nd, marks the beginning of School Counseling Appreciation Week. Every single member of the TEMS staff plays a role in making our school a safe and inviting place where students come to learn and grow. Middle school is a huge time of social emotional growth as students at this age navigate friendships, balancing academic work and extracurriculars, and maturing before they head to high school. Our school counselors are so special, and provide support to our students each and every day.

Please join me in thanking Mrs. Levrault, Mrs. Lakomy, Mrs. Torres, Mrs. Jennings, and Mrs. Kutz.

Reminder: NAEP Assessment for SOME 8th Graders on February 25th

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is being administered to SOME 8th Grade students on February 25th. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public.

If your child is one of the 8th graders that have been randomly selected to take the test in reading, mathematics, or science you will have been notified individually in January. This letter will include more information about what the test is and information for opting out. More information about NAEP can be found here.

Nursing Information for Grade 6 Families

In our efforts to help families plan ahead, our school nurses want to share information with 6th grade families about the medical requirements for the start of 7th grade.

A current physical and record of the vaccines listed below needs to be completed and shared with our office before the start of seventh grade. Some doctor’s offices administer these vaccines during the 6th grade physical so it is likely that some families may already have this documentation.

Please reference the following health requirements for the start of 7th grade:
● Most Recent Physical- within the last year
● Tdap (brand name: Adacel, Boostrix) - one dose
● Meningococcal (Menactra, MCV4) - one dose

TEMS Library Media Center

  • During the months of December and January, all sixth grade students learned how to access our district and school databases through the TE LMC page. For this lesson, we specifically focused on using Britannica School. Students also created an account and correctly cited one source using our district wide citation generator, NoodleTools.

  •  We talked about the difference between using a database versus a website and how a database was a good place to start any research/class assignment when looking for reliable background information on a topic. Many students already knew the importance of citing one’s sources. All students brought up the importance of giving credit to where credit was due as well as practicing being ethical users of information.

  • I was proud of all sixth graders who worked diligently as we walked through the process of creating a correctly formatted citation within NoodleTools. The exposure to knowing where to go for good, vetted information before going to the open web, along with knowing how to access and use NoodleTools will serve students well as they progress through middle school and help prepare them for their research experiences going forward.
