  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On February 2nd, 1887, the first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  This began a long line of “Punxsutawney Phil” groundhogs who have helped signal whether there would be six more weeks of winter if they saw their own shadow or an early spring if they did not. Also on this date in 1913, Grand Central Station in New York City opened, which in addition to being one of the busiest transit sites, is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States.  For you baseball fans out there, today in 1876 the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was formed paving the way for an eventual American League to be formed in 1901 and soon after leading to the first World Series in 1903.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The boys basketball team traveled to Tolland last week and beat the Falcons 66-34.  After a slow start the Cougars exploded for 26 points in the second quarter to take a commanding lead at the half, 43-18.  The pressure defense and well balanced offense once again led the team to victory.  The boys are now 11-2 on the season and take on Ellington next week.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On January 29th, 1785, Seth Thomas was born in Wolcott, Connecticut.  For a portion of his life, Thomas worked with Eli Terry in the venture of manufacturing clocks.  Thomas eventually went into business himself in the town of Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut.  This soon grew and, when passed onto his son, the Seth Thomas brand continued to expand.  In 1875, the town of Plymouth Hollow was renamed to Thomaston after Seth Thomas who strongly contributed to making clocks both affordable and accurate. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 28th,  1986, tragedy struck the NASA program when the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after take-off.  The seven members of the crew were lost including Christa McAuliffe who would have been the first teacher to travel in space.  Also on this date in 1985, the recording of “We are the World” occurred shortly after the American Music Awards took place.  This was strategically done to maximize the number of musicians to participate and included Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, and Willie Nelson among 45 total stars.  Recorded over only a period of several hours, the single was in stores and on the radio just five weeks later.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The Lady Cougars were in action last Friday night, beating the VCMS Lady Eagles by a wide margin.  In the first quarter, TE set the tone early, getting steals and getting easy baskets near the rim.  TE shut out the Lady Rams after the first quarter with their stifling defense while improving on the offensive end as well.  Execution with the ball allowed nearly every player who played the opportunity to score.  Mia Leroy led TE with 8 points on the night, while Savannah Burns and Sydney Miller both chipped in six points on the night.  Three others had four points apiece in the victory.  Good luck ladies and good job on the win.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 23rd, 1957, the toy company Wham-O produced the first aerodynamic discs which are now known to fans all over the world as Frisbees.  The frisbee’s origin has ties to Connecticut.  William Frisbee opened the Frisbie Pie Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut and kids of all ages would throw the empty pie tins to one another yelling “Frisbie!”  Decades later, two inventing partners created a plastic version of the disc and called it the “Flying Saucer.”  One of the partners, Morrison, split off and improved the model and sold it to Wham-O as the “Pluto Platter.”  The design was then updated and patented, with the name of Frisbee (consciously misspelled from the original Frisbie Pie Company with two e’s at the end of the word).  Today, the Frisbee still remains a popular toy for many of all ages.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The boys basketball team defeated Suffield Middle School on Wednesday afternoon 67-33.  The Cougars well balanced offense led by Logan Jackson with 17 and Christian Lee with 13 points helped maintain a lead throughout the game.  Their defense held the opponent to 3 points in the fourth quarter which helped secure the victory.  The Cougars play today.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 22nd, 1930, Stephen Tyng Mather passed away after a lifelong pursuit of preserving America’s natural landscapes.  Though not born in Connecticut, Mather always considered Darien, Connecticut his home after spending many summers there as a kid and eventually inheriting his great grandfather’s home after he passed.  His appreciation for natural wilderness and beauty, fueled his lobbying for the establishment of the United States National Park Service, an organization that he would serve as its first director beginning in 1916 to 1929.  Mather is memorialized in places across the United States and the Mather family homestead in Darien is a National Historic Landmark. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Last night, the Timothy Edwards Lady Cougars beat the Suffield Lady Wildcats 40–28. It was an intense first half as TE came out of the gate with a 10 to 4 lead. However, Suffield stormed back and took a halftime lead of 17 to 14. The Lady Cougars stepped up their intensity in the second half with relentless pressure which resulted in a 13 point 3rd quarter differential. TE never looked back and finished out the game with non stop defensive intensity which led to the 12 point victory. Leighton Edwards lead on the offensive end along with Deeksha Reddy with eight points apiece. Edwards was also a stall worth on the defensive side of the ball with a number of steals on the night. Emma Rutkauskus, Victoria Macchi and Mia Leroy each at six points, while Kaitlin Eichler, Sydney Miller and Raegan Burnham each chipped in two apiece. TE play host to Vernon Center Middle School on Friday after school. Come on out and cheer on the girls.

  • The boys basketball team defeated Windsor Locks MIddle School 66-60 on Tuesday at home.  After being down 11 at halftime and only having 22 points, the Cougars pressure defense and fast break offense finally broke their opponents.  TEMS outscored Windsor Locks 25-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 21st, 1743, John Fitch, an inventor and pioneer in steamboat construction, was born in Windsor a settlement in what was still the British colony of Connecticut.  Fitch is credited as the first American to design a practical steamboat.  After several years of varying success in metalworking, business ventures, and cartography, Fitch became part of a patent conflict with James Rumsey over the origin of the steamboat.  This highly publicized debate helped inspire the birth of the Patent Act of 1790.  Though overshadowed by Robert Fulton’s popularization of steam navigation, Fitch’s work demonstrated the capability of steam power to propel boats. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The boys basketball team beat JFK Middle School on Friday, 71-38.  The Cougars' pressure defense and fastbreak offense fueled the lopsided victory.  The balanced effort was once again led by Logan Jackson and Kaiden Girard.  The boys play Tuesday at home against Windsor Locks.

  • The Timothy Edwards Lady Cougars got back to their winning ways last night taking on Windsor Locks, winning by 45–11. Nearly every player scored for TE last night as Emma Rutkauskus led the squad with eight points in the contest. • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 20th, 1942, the War Department announced it was changing the name of Connecticut’s newest air base to Army Air Base, Bradley Field. This was done after Lieutenant Eugene Bradley, a young pilot, died in a training crash at the new Windsor Locks airfield, becoming the base’s first fatality.  After WWII, the site was converted to civilian use and today operates as Bradley International Airport.  The renaming and ongoing memorialization of the field represent a lasting and significant moment in Connecticut history. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The Lady Cougars are on a two game slide as they fell to the JFK Patriots 38 to 29 last Friday night. The start of the game was similar to their most recent defeat, one in which they did not get into the game until the second half. After falling behind early, TE woke up after the intermission and put a little pressure on the Lady Patriots causing turnovers and scoring on the offensive end. In the end, it wasn’t enough to get them over the line, but they fought hard to get back into the game. The Lady Cougars had several contributors in the scoring column where 11 of their 14 players had at least one point in the game.  TE looks to overturn their recent run of form this week against Windsor Locks, Suffield and Vernon. Come out on Friday night and cheer on the girls.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 16, 1919, the 18th amendment, also known as the Prohibition amendment, was ratified by the states which prohibited the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes.” In 1933, the 21st amendment was passed and ratified effectively repealing the 18th amendment.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Good morning, TE. Today we have a Guessing Game for you. It begins with a few clues. Listen carefully and see if you can identify this historical leader before the answer is revealed.Clue 1:This leader believed that lasting social change required moral courage rather than violence.Clue 2:He used powerful words and peaceful protest to challenge injustice in the United States.Clue 3: His vision of equality was shared in a historic 1963 speech that is still studied today.Final Question:
Who is this influential civil rights leader?Answer:Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we move through our day, let’s reflect on how our words and actions can contribute to fairness, respect, and justice in our school community. As we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19th Have a great day.

  • It was a tough night on the hardwood for the Lady Cougars as they traveled to Tolland to take on the Lady Falcons. Unfortunately, TE fell 43–33 when the final buzzer sounded. TE couldn’t get their legs under them to start the game and fell behind early in the contest. They were able to claw their way back and bring it to within four midway the third quarter, but Tolland extended their lead once again in the fourth. Overall Coach Chandler was pleased with how the girls responded after the first half and commended them on their effort after the final whistle. Leighton Edwards led the Lady Cougars with 9 points and while Ali Kupec chipped in 6 points on the night. No rest for the weary as TE plays again tonight against JFK in Enfield. Good luck girls.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 15, 1929, civil rights activist and leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born.  Famously known for his “I Have a Dream” speech, King’s leadership helped inspire the 24th amendment abolishing poll taxes and the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 prohibiting racial discrimination in employment and education and outlawed racial segregation in public facilities.  In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law designating the third Monday of January as a national holiday which was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1986. • It’s time for “this date in history.” On January 14, 1639, representatives from Wethersfield, Windsor, and Hartford adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the first constitution in the American colonies.  Also on January 14,  1784, the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, bringing the American Revolution to an end.  Also on this date, Benedict Arnold (one of history’s most famous traitors) was born.  In pop culture, actors Carl Weathers, LL Cool J, and Jason Bateman were also born. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Jump Start will not be held today.

  • The boys basketball team traveled to Ellington to take on Ellington Middle School yesterday and returned to their winning ways with a 72-49 victory.  After a slow start and competitive first half, the Cougars were down 28-26 at half.  The boys then exploded offensively for 46 points in the second half and held Ellington to 21 points with their stifling defense.  The well balanced offense had everyone score.  The Cougars play JFK on Friday at home.

  • Last night the Lady Cougars bounced back from their performance on Monday with a resounding win over Ellington.  TE came out on fire and forced Ellington into turnover after turnover which led to a commanding lead after the first period.  The remaining three periods were much of the same as TE dominated play throughout the game.  Emma Rustauskus led the way with 18 points on the night, followed by Deeksha Reddy with 13 with all but one of her points coming in the third period.  In fact, eleven players in total scored for TE in the win.  During this stretch of four games, TE plays again on Thursday and Friday...both being away.  Good luck ladies and congrats on the win!!!

  • Last night the Lady Cougars suffered their first loss in the past two seasons, falling to the hands of the Illing Lady Rams.  TE never was able to grab a foothold in the game and struggled to find their offense the entire night.  There must have been something covering the hoop all game as the Lady Cougars went 1 for 8 from the line and only had eight buckets in the contest.  Take nothing away from Illing as they executed their game plan to a "T", get the ball in #3's hands and let her run the show.  And run the show she did...scoring 17 points. TE was led by Leighton Edwards with seven points, while five others chipped in a bucket apiece.  The Lady Cougars will have to shake off last night's performance quickly as they are hosting Ellington today after school.  Good luck ladies.

  • And now for our next Today in History: On January 9, 1788, Connecticut became the fifth state to join the union with a 128 to 40 vote in the Connecticut State Convention.  Connecticut was a strong supporter of joining the union in large part because of its role in helping inspire the creation of a bicameral legislature in the federal government.  Known by most as the “Great Compromise”, it was also known as the “Connecticut Compromise” solving the rift between larger and smaller states during the formative stages of our nation.  Also on this date in 2007, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • And now for our next Today in History, On January 8, 1790, George Washington delivered the nation’s first State of the Union address to Congress.  He consciously wore an understated wardrobe so as not to appear like a monarch.  His wardrobe was made of cloth produced right here in Connecticut by the Hartford Woolen Manufactory, one of several investments from Connecticut’s own James Wadsworth. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The Lady Cougars traveled to East Hartford last night to take on the Lady Falcons in another CRAL battle. TE came out on top 54 to 33. It was a much improved performance from the game against Suffield. TE came out shooting well from outside. Leading the first quarter 18 to 9. In the second, the Lady Cougars seemed a little complacent and let East Hartford back in the game. The second half was a different story altogether as TE extended their lead and never looked back. Leighton Edwards led all scorers with 18 points on the night. Savannah Burns and Emma Rustauskus each had six.  Mackenzie Mason and Raegan Burnham each chipped in five on the night. Ali Kupec and Harper Kelly had four points, while Victoria Macchi, Eden Hauschild and Claire Kaminski had two points each. TE plays host to Sedgewick Middle School from West Hartford today after school. Come out and cheer on the girls.

  • And now for our next Today in History, On January 7, 1924 Hiram Bingham III, a Yale professor, WWI pilot, and politician was sworn in as CT governor.  24 hours later he resigned to take a US Senate seat he had won in a special election.  Also on this date, actor Nicholas Cage and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson were born.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Last night, the Lady Cougars returned from the long break to take down the Suffield Wildcats 32-30.  It was not the prettiest of contests with both sides struggling to get a foothold in the game.  The game was nip and tuck all afternoon as the Lady Cougars went into halftime with a 22-18 lead.  Suffield came to play in the second half holding TE to only 10 points over the final two quarters.  The Lady Cougar defense was equal to the task as they led 32-28 with two minutes to play.  Though the game wasn't completely decided until literally the final whistle of the contest.  With TE leading by two points, Suffield stole the ball with four seconds to play.  Raegan Burnham chased down the Wildcat player and fouled her as time expired.  With no time left on the clock, Suffield went to the line with a chance to tie the game.  Fortunately for TE, she missed her first shot and with no time on the clock, she was not afforded a second attempt, leaving TE with the 32-30 victory.  Leading the Lady Cougars was Mia Leroy with 10 points, while Mackenzie Mason chipped in six points on the night.  Other contributors in the point column were Leighton Edwards, Emma Rustauskus and Ali Kupec all with four points each and Deeksha Reddy and Katelyn Eichler added two points apiece.  TE travels to East Hartford after school today to take on the Lady Falcons, and return home on Thursday with a non-conference game against Sedgewick Middle School of West Hartford.  Come out and cheer on the girls.
