  • It’s time for “this date in history.” Picking up from Monday’s announcements, on June 10, 1783, Daniel Bissell received the Badge of Military Honor for his efforts during the Revolutionary War.  This honor was created by George Washington and the only known recipients were three Connecticut natives, Elijah Churchill of Enfield and William Brown of Stamford, with Daniel Bissell from East Windsor being the third and final one on this date.  Due to lost and/or damaged resources, it’s difficult to determine if there were any other recipients.  The original Badge of Military Merit, as described in Washington’s General Orders, was intended to be sewn onto the left portion of a soldier’s uniform in the shape of a purple heart so that others could quickly recognize the distinction.  In 1932, the year of George Washington’s 200th birthday, General Douglas MacArthur wanted to honor Washington’s memory and this led the way to a new medal–a heart-shaped medal featuring a profile of Washington with a purple background.  The Purple Heart is considered to be one of the highest honors in the U.S. military and is now awarded by the President of the United States to any active service member who is wounded or killed in action.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On June 9, 1915 Connecticut’s oldest wooden home was saved.  Located in East Lyme, the Thomas Lee House’s wooden framed home has survived intact for over 350 years.  Though, at the beginning of the 20th century, it was almost torn down as town officials in East Lyme discussed its fate.  In 1914, the East Lyme Historical Society in collaboration with other local groups conducted fundraising efforts to purchase the house and pay for historically accurate restorations of the home.  After his time in office, President William Howard Taft visited the Thomas Lee House as the guest of honor–Taft himself was a descendent of Thomas Lee.  According to the Historical Society’s minutes, Taft gave an address emphasizing that “we can’t afford to forget our past.”  And that is a fitting way to conclude this edition of “this date in history.”

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On June 8, 1783, George Washington praised Daniel Bissell for his efforts to gather intelligence on British forces during the Revolutionary War.  Bissell was a Connecticut native and spent some of his time behind enemy lines gathering information on British fortifications which he sketched from memory when he returned to the Patriot lines.  On June 10th, Bissell became the third and final recipient of the Badge of Military Merit.  More on this distinction on June 10th’s “this date in history” announcements. Meanwhile, in pop culture, on June 8, 1966, the National Football League and the American Football League announced a merger that was to become effective in 1970 giving birth to the NFL we know of now. On June 8, 1984, the now-classic comedy Ghostbusters was released in American theaters.  On June 8, 2002, Serena Williams defeated her older sister Venus winning her first French Open title. • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On June 5, 1851, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was first published as a 40-week serial in the publication The National Era.  It was only to run for a few weeks, but Harriet Beecher Stowe’s story became very popular and would become an iconic anti-slavery story.  The infamous piece of literature became linked to the anti-slavery attitude in the North en route to the eventual Civil War.  On June 5 1944, Allied forces completed final preparations for history’s most famous one day invasion called D-Day.  Including many American troops and led by Allied Supreme Commander American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the June 6th invasion by Allied Nations would mark the beginning of the end to German occupation of Europe and would eventually lead to Germany’s surrender less than one year later. Famous birthdays on this date include Saxophonist Kenny G and actor Mark Wahlberg.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On June 4, 1982, the Connecticut legislature passed the nation’s first “Lemon Law.”  The bill was introduced by South Windsor’s own John J. Woodcock III and it was designed to address seriously defective new automobiles which were popularly referred to as “lemons.”  The Act provided legal protections for automobile consumers who were seeking repairs for consistently faulty problems with their new vehicle.  State Representative Woodcock would eventually focus his energies on passing a lemon law for used cars as well.  Connecticut would set a trend with this law and eventually led to all 50 states and the District of Columbia each having their own lemon laws.  On June 4, 1983, the song “Every Breath You Take” was the number 1 hit on Billboard’s Top 100 for its 8th straight week and one year later on this date, American musician Bruce Springsteen released “Born in the U.S.A.” which would become one of his most iconic tunes. • Congratulations to our Lady Cougars Softball team! Yesterday was championship day! The TEMS Lady Cougars softball team traveled to Windsor High School to face off against Sage Park Middle School in the CRAL Championship game — and they came through in a BIG way with a 9-1 victory! This undefeated team finished the season with an amazing 13-0 record and walked away Champions. Incredible work, Lady Cougars! In the First Inning, Leighton Edwards scored off of Claire Kaminski's RBI groundout, but Sage Park answered back when one of their players singled down the right field line to tie it up at 1-1.The Fourth Inning: This is where our Lady Cougars took control! Raegan Burnham singled down the left field line, Emma Rutkauskas singled to center field, and Isis Hollister walked — and all three scored to give us a 4-1 lead. That's the kind of teamwork that wins games! Leighton Edwards was absolutely on fire, getting four hits in four at bats. She tripled in the seventh inning, doubled in the first, and singled twice more in the fourth and fifth innings. That's the definition of clutch hitting! Emma Rutkauskas was fantastic on the mound as our pitcher, striking out six batters and giving up only three hits over all seven innings. She only walked two batters and gave up just one run. Plus, she drove in two runs at the plate! Raegan Burnham also drove in two runs and showed her speed by stealing two bases.Claire Kaminski collected two hits in four at bats, helping fuel our offensive attack. The entire team collected 10 hits total while holding Sage Park to just one run. Great defense and teamwork all around!Mrs. Giaccone would like to send a special shout out to all the 8th graders: She wants you all to know that she'll miss you next year and wishes you the very best as you head to high school!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the 15th U.S. State.  And with a spotlight on Connecticut history, on June 1, 1842, Connecticut Governor Chauncey Cleveland signed an act formally incorporating the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT.  Construction began immediately and the museum officially opened two years later in 1844.  The building was named after its benefactor, Daniel Wadsworth who was the wealthy descendent of Wadsworths dating back to the Revolutionary War era.  Wadsworth referred to his project as an “atheneum,” a Greek word that stood for an institution devoted to the study and appreciation of arts, literature, and natural science.  The building soon became a landmark icon for not only Connecticut, but the nation as a whole.  Today, the museum remains the largest in Connecticut and contains over 50,000 works of art from around the world.  On June 1, 1980, CNN premiered becoming the world’s first 24 hour news network.  Famous birthdays on this date include actors Morgan Freeman and Amy Schumer and singer Alanis Morissette.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE Cougars baseball team clinched the CRAL Championship Friday evening, defeating the Tolland Falcons 3-1 at a packed Rotary Field to secure back-to-back league titles. Zack Powers took the mound for the Cougars and set the tone early, retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced to keep the Falcons off the board. The Cougars broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. After Dennis Yin walked, Wes Prather was hit by a pitch, and Corbyn Falco walked to load the bases, Dom Caputa stepped up to the plate. Caputa, who had already hit a triple earlier in the game, delivered a clutch single to drive in Yin and Prather, giving TE a 2-0 lead. Tolland managed to answer with a run in the top of the fifth, but Powers limited the damage to keep the Cougars ahead. Looking for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, Tino Durbois was hit by a pitch, quickly stole second base, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Grady Moynihan, who had doubled earlier in the game, hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field to bring Durbois home and extend the lead to 3-1. The Falcons mounted one final rally in the top of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. After a quick mound visit from Coach S. to settle things down, Powers induced a ground ball to shortstop. Caputa fielded it, stepped on second base, and fired to first to turn a dramatic, game-ending double play. Powers earned the complete-game victory, allowing just four hits and no earned runs over seven innings while striking out seven. Caputa led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  To win back-to-back championships is a huge achievement, and the way the boys fought right down to that final double play showed exactly what this team is made of, Coach S said after the game. Zack pitched a masterpiece, and I couldn't be prouder of how this entire group stepped up all season long.  With the win, the Cougars finish the season with a 12-2 record and become back-to-back champions in the CRAL! Congratulations to the boys on a historic season!

  • Raegan Burnham was the star of the show in the CRAL Tournament semi-finals, driving in four runs on just three hits to lead the TEMS Cougars to a big victory yesterday at TEMS. She had an amazing game—a single in the first, an inside-the-park home run in the third, and a triple in the fifth that scored two runs. Ellington MS got things started with a solo inside-the-park home run in the first inning. But the Cougars answered right back when Raegan singled down the right field line to tie it up.The Cougars took control in the second inning when Teresa Gudauskas singled to center field and Gabriella Nisyrios doubled down the right field line. A passed ball brought in another run, and TEMS was up 3-1. Raegan struck again in the third with another inside-the-park home run, and the Cougars kept piling on the runs. In the fourth inning alone, TEMS scored seven runs with help from triples by Mollie Dumond and Lena Dittrich, plus a couple of errors and some smart baserunning. The fifth inning was just as impressive—five more runs scored on five hits, including a double from Emma Rutkauskas and another double from Isis Holister. The hitting was incredible. Leighton Edwards and Raegan each collected three hits, while Teresa and Lena also had multiple hits. The Cougars racked up 17 total hits and drew eight walks as a team—showing they had great discipline at the plate.Emma earned the win on the mound, giving up just four hits and five runs over six innings while striking out eight batters.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 28, 1788, the Federalist papers–a collection of 85 essays on the proposed new Constitution and on the nature of republican government, were published in book form.  Famously written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, these were iconic writings associated with the beginnings of the new American republic.  On May 28, 1919, the Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association (CWSA) launched a statewide campaign to reach every Connecticut woman of voting age to prepare them for their newly acquired civic duties, specifically voting.  This occurred days after The U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote.  Eventually, this led to the 19th Amendment which was ratified in August of 1920. On May 28, 1957, baseball owners unanimously voted to allow the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to move to San Francisco and Los Angeles, respectively. Speaking of the San Francisco Giants, on this date in 2006, Barry Bonds hit his 715th home run as a Giant surpassing Babe Ruth for second place.  He would eventually become the home run leader with 762 home runs.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE baseball team advanced to the championship game with an 11-1 victory over Sage Park MS in the CRAL semifinals yesterday afternoon.  After falling behind early, the Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI single from Ryan Stead and a sacrifice fly by Dennis Yin. TE then put the game away in the third inning by scoring seven runs and taking a 9-1 lead. The big frame was highlighted by an RBI double from Dom Caputo, an RBI single from Weston Durbois, and a two-run double by Wes Prather. Prather also earned the win on the mound, giving up just two hits and one run over four innings while striking out six and walking two. Elliot Wenzel came on in relief to throw a scoreless fifth inning, adding two strikeouts to close things out.  At the plate, Durbois, Caputo, and Grady Moynihan led the offense with two hits each, while Durbois, Prather, and Yin each drove in two runs. The Cougars also showed great discipline at the plate, drawing 10 total walks during the game, led by Caysen Lewie and Zack Powers with two apiece.  "I was really proud of our patience and focus today," Coach S said after the game. "We didn't panic after falling behind early, and everyone contributed to that big third inning. It was a total team win."  With the victory, TE improves to 11-2 on the season. Up next is the final game of the year: the CRAL Championship this Friday against Tolland. Come out to support the boys, and good luck Cougars!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 27, 1889, the American petrochemical corporation South Penn Oil Company (later the Pennzoil Company) was founded in Pennsylvania.  On May 27, 1930, the Chrysler Building opened in New York City and, at the time, was the tallest man-made structure in the world.  On May 27, 1933 Walt Disney released the animated short film The Three Little Pigs featuring the song Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?.  The song highlighted resilience in the face of adversity as Americans were still reeling from the impact of the Great Depression.  Just a few years later on May 27, 1937, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge opened for foot traffic and highlighted a magnificent technological, engineering, and artistic achievement–it was the tallest and longest suspension bridge for decades. Famous movie releases on this date include From Russia with Love, Smokey and the Bandit, Madagascar, and Top Gun: Maverick. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 26, 1868, U.S. President Andrew Johnson’s impeachment trial ended with his acquittal in the Senate.  On May 26, 1927 the Ford Motor Company ended production of the infamous Model T.  A staple of early American roadways, it helped normalize cars as a mode of transportation in the early 20th century. On this date in 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon and Soviet President Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreements beginning a wave of arms stabilization for some time between the two super powers.  On May 26, 2006 the popular animated film Cars premiered at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Nominated for two Academy Awards, the film became incredibly popular and led to two sequels.  Famous birthdays on this date include actor John Wayne, singers Stevie Nicks, Hank Williams Jr., Lenny Kravitz, and astronaut Sally Ride. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TEMS Track and Field Team are BACK TO BACK STATE CHAMPIONS! After only having 2 regular season meets, the Cougars brought everything they had to Manchester High on Saturday to show the state what they had to offer. The meet started off very strong with the 4 by 800 team of Myles D., Jackson R., Tommy B., and Cayden P. coming in third place. Timothy Edwards was absolutely DOMINANT in the hurdles. Our very own Caiden Green finished FIRST in the state, while Dip Rout finished right behind him clenching a second place finish. And that's not all - Logan Jackson got 6th place finishes in both the hurdles and the high jump. James Slogesky had a big PR in the mile run which earned him a 6th place finish. In the throws, Kaiden Green secured crucial points in the shot put with his 6th place finish. With only one event left in the meet, TE needed a huge performance in the 4x400 relay to secure the win. Determined and driven, the relay team of James S., Franklin M., Evan T., and Max M. executed a perfect race. They all ran a FANTASTIC race that landed them in 5th place. This gave TE the right amount of points they needed to take home the gold against 68 other teams. Congratulations to all the boys who competed on Saturday and the whole team for another fantastic season!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 21, Clara Barton founded the American Association of the Red Cross, later named the American Red Cross.  On May 21, 1901, Connecticut became the first state to pass a speed limit law for automobiles.  The law required cars to not exceed 12 mph within city limits and no more than 15 mph on rural or suburban roads.  The law also provided governance over the interactions between automobiles and horse-drawn carriages which were still widely used at the time. Vehicles were required to slow down at the sight of any horses and if the horse seemed scared, the car was required to stop.  On May 21, Charles Lindburgh completed the first solo, nonstop transatlantic flight.  Five years later to the day, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to pilot an airplane solo across the Atlantic Ocean.  Popular movies released on this date include: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Annie, Mad Max 2, Notting Hill, and Shrek Forever After. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were granted a patent for using copper rivets on canvas trousers, specifically on pocket corners to provide strength–when the use of canvas transitioned to denim, this ultimately led to the rise in popularity of blue jeans.  Since that time, the Levis company  alone has sold more than 200 million pairs of jeans.  On May 20, 2015, David Letterman stepped down as the host of The Late Show with David Letterman.  One of the trailblazers to modern late night talk shows, David Letterman entertained many devoted fans for 33 years.  Famous birthdays on this date include singer Cher and actor Jimmy Stewart.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE Cougars baseball team found themselves not only battling Tolland, but Mother Nature as well on Tuesday afternoon.  Heavy rain and lightning forced the game to be called after just four and a half innings, bringing the matchup to an early end. At the time of the weather stoppage, TE was trailing 4-1, which ultimately stood as the final score.  Elliot Wenzel got the start on the mound for the Cougars, pitching three innings. He struck out three batters and walked two, giving up three hits and four runs, though only one of those runs was earned. On the offensive side, the lineup was paced by Grady Moynihan, who tallied a pair of singles. Tino Durbois and Corbyn Falco also chipped in, adding a single apiece. Despite the weather-shortened loss, TE finishes a fantastic regular season with an impressive 10-2 record. The Cougars will now wait to find out who their opponent will be in the CRAL semifinal game, scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th at TE.  Come out to support the boys. Good luck Cougars!

Roosevelt met with Prime Minister Winston Churchill to begin details on a cross-channel invasion against the German army during World War Two in what became famously known as D-Day on June 6, 1944 ultimately leading to the end of the war on the European front.   In pop culture, the popular show Glee debuted on this date–in its first season, Glee was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, six Satellite Awards, and dozens of other awards as well. • In a pitcher’s duel on Monday afternoon, Vernon defeated the TE baseball team 2-0, snapping their 23-game winning streak dating back to last season. Wesley Prather started on the mound for TE, pitching five strong innings while surrendering just four hits and two runs (one earned), striking out three, and walking none.  Though TE outhit Vernon 6 to 5, they ultimately couldn't find the timely hit needed to bring any runs across. Grady Moynihan and Tino Durbois led the Cougars' offense, both going 2-for-3 at the plate, with Moynihan also flashing his speed to steal two bases.  The Cougars look to bounce back immediately as they travel to Tolland for their next game today. Despite the tough loss, their record stands at a stellar 10-1 on the season, keeping them firmly in first place in the league.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 15, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Quartering Acts requiring locations and conditions for British soldiers to be provided room and board in Colonial homes or businesses.  This did not go well for the British, it would be one of the signature grievances by colonists en route to the eventual American Revolution.  On this date in 1942, a bill establishing a women’s corp in the U.S. Army became a law, creating the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp and providing women official military status.  In pop culture, Mickey Mouse made his debut on this date in 1928.  Also on this date, in 1940 the McDonald’s hamburger stand opened in San Bernardino, California.  By 1955, there were nine locations and, in 1961, McDonald’s was trademarked.  Several years later, Ronald McDonald entered as the iconic fast food representative and the term “golden arches” joined the American vocabulary in 1967.  Today, there are over 40,000 McDonald’s locations in more than 100 nations.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 14, 1787, delegates assembled in Philadelphia to begin the peaceful transition of government under the Articles of Confederation to a new government–eventually leading to the creation and adoption of the U.S. Constitution.  On May 14, 1804, Lewis and Clark began their now famous expedition from the American Midwest to the Pacific coast.  100 years later on this date, America would host its first Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri.  On May 14, 1973, the first U.S. space station Skylab was launched.  On May 14, 1998, the last episode of the iconic Seinfeld aired.  The show developed into a landmark of American popular culture and is considered one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.  Not bad for a show about nothing.  Famous birthdays on this date include film directors George Lucas, Robert Zemickis, and Sofia Coppola, actress Miranda Cosgrove, and football player Rob Gronkowski.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 13, 1897, the Columbia Electric Vehicle under the entrepreneurship of Albert Pope, conducted the first demonstration of an electric car.  Topping out at 15 mph, the vehicle was marketed as the next step in transportation to replace the horse-drawn carriage.  Electricity, however, was very expensive and the electric power, battery charged vehicle was quickly surpassed by gas-powered vehicles.  On May 13, 1973 a famous showdown occurred between Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court.  A critic of women’s tennis, Riggs originally challenged Billy Jean King who initially refused.  Riggs defeated Court, but Billie Jean King would accept a second invitation to play.  She beat Riggs on September 20, 1973 and won $100,000.  The publicity surrounding these events helped elevate the notoriety of the women’s game which became an even bigger win for the sport of tennis.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

The Cougars' offense exploded in the second inning, plating seven runs to break the game open early.  The second-inning was fueled by RBI doubles from Miles Perez and Weston Durbois, along with a timely RBI single from Dom Caputo. Durbois provided the pop in the middle of the lineup all afternoon, finishing the day with two doubles and three RBIs.  TE’s 13-hit attack was relentless. Corbyn Falco stayed hot with three hits, including two doubles, while Grady Moynihan also turned in a three-hit performance. Caputo added to the hit parade with two singles of his own. On the mound, Zack Powers earned the win for TE. Powers was efficient over four innings of work, allowing just two hits and three runs while striking out four. • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 7, 1915, a German submarine sank the Lusitania, a British cruiseliner that also had American passengers.  Nearly 130 Americans were lost and the event indirectly led to U.S. entrance in World War I a couple of years later.  On May 7, 1992, the 27th Amendment received the necessary votes after the state of Michigan ratified it–this amendment concerned the salary increases to the U.S. Congress members.  On May 7, 2009, Catherine Ralston, a 12-year old, received the title of “Baker of the Year” after participating in an Easy-Bake Oven baking competition.  Her winning creation was a “Queen of Hearts Strawberry Tart.” The iconic Easy-Bake Oven sold over 500,000 units in its launch year of 1963 by the company Kenner, now known as Hasbro.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  This is a sad day in Connecticut sports history–on May 6, 1997, the owner of the then Hartford Whalers announced he was moving the NHL team to North Carolina and renamed them the Carolina Hurricanes.  The Whalers had been playing in Hartford since 1975 beginning as the New England Whalers, eventually renamed as the Hartford Whalers in 1979.  Though the team had varying levels of success, it had a tremendously loyal Connecticut following and Hartford Whalers merchandise still remains popular and profitable for distributors.  It remains a hope of many that the Hartford Whalers be resurrected and return to the Nutmeg State.  On this date in 1998, Steve Jobs of Apple introduced the first iMac, a personal computer that became widely successful and helped revive the company which was struggling at the time.  Sticking with pop culture, on this date in 1957 and 2004 respectively, the final episode of I Love Lucy and Friends–both extremely popular comedy shows of their respective eras. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Yesterday showcased an absolute thriller on the baseball diamond. The TE baseball team battled it out for 10 innings to secure a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Kennedy Middle School!  The game was an intense pitcher's duel from the start. TE pitchers struck out 15, while JFK sat down 12. Dom Caputa stepped on the hill first.  The pitcher gave up three hits and one run over five and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking two. He was magnificent.  Lyle Dresser came in relief and pitched brilliantly to  earn the win. The hurler allowed four hits and zero runs over three and one-third innings, striking out four and walking none.  The Cougars initially got on the board in the fifth with a clutch single from Wes Prather. But after Kennedy tied it up late, the game went into extra innings. Finally, in the top of the tenth, Corbyn Falco smashed a double deep to left field, bringing Prather home for what would be the game-winning run!   Prather and Zach Powers led the offense with two hits each, while Caysen Lewie chipped in by drawing three walks.  But the drama wasn't over yet. In the bottom of the tenth, Kennedy had the tying and winning runs on second and third with no outs. With the game on the line, Coach S. summoned Zach Powers from the bullpen.  Completely unfazed by the pressure, the right-hander proceeded to strike out the heart of the lineup: the number 2, 3, and 4 hitters. He slammed the door to earn the save and end the game!  The Cougars improved to a perfect 6-and-0 on the season. Come out and support your undefeated Cougars as they host East Hartford this Thursday! Go Cougars!

  • The TEMS Cougars Softball team dominated Tolland Middle school  yesterday with an impressive 19-1 victory at Timothy Edwards Middle School! Raegan Burnham was the standout player of the game, driving in 4 runs on just 2 hits. The highlight? An inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning that scored 3 runs. She also singled in the third inning for another RBI. Pitcher Emma Rutkauskas had an incredible day on the mound, striking out 13 batters! She gave up only 1 hit and 1 run over 5 innings. Emma also helped out at the plate, going 3-for-4 and leading the team with 6 RBIs.The Cougars came out firing in the third inning, scoring a massive 13 runs on 9 hits. Claire Kaminski, Teresa Gudauskas, Rylie Goudreault, and Arianna Coco all contributed with hits, and multiple runners scored on an error as well.Claire Kaminski led the way with 4 hits in 4 at bats, while Raegan Burnham and Arianna Coco also collected multiple hits. Brooke Dixon chipped in with a hit as well.  The Cougars showed great plate discipline, earning 8 walks as a team. Congratulations ladies!

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On May 5, 1890, Mary Kies of Killingly, Connecticut became the first woman to receive a patent in American history.  Due to destroyed records, it is difficult to track down the specifics of her patent, but she was known to help manufacture women’s hats using a patented process of weaning straw and silk together.  Coincidentally, on this date in 1868, Martha Jones became the first Black woman to receive a U.S. patent on a machine that could husk and shell corn in one procedure.  On May 5, 1904, American pitcher Cy Young logged the first perfect game of the modern era with no runners reaching first base.  He pitched for the Boston Americans who were facing the Philadelphia Athletics.  On this date in 1973, the American racehorse Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby capturing the coveted U.S. Triple Crown in horse racing.  On May 5, 1978, Ben & Jerry’s opened its first ice cream shop.  Happy Cinco de Mayo today as this is an annual celebration that is more popular in America than in Mexico as it is a celebration of Mexican-American culture.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.
