It’s time for “this date in history.” On February 18, 1930 Pluto, once believed to be the ninth planet, was discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. On February 18, 1954 David Mullaney of Fairfield, Connecticut filed a patent for his innovative “game ball” which was later renamed as the infamous “Wiffle Ball” in reference to how easy it was for pitchers to control their throws in ways that may make the batter whiff. Due to its popularity, Mullaney moved his production factory to Shelton, Connecticut where the Wiffle Ball, Inc. still exists. To this day, every single Wiffle ball produced has been done so out of the state of Connecticut. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

Last night the Lady Cougars battled Tolland in the semi-final round of the CRAL tournament. Unfortunately, TE fell short in their quest to repeat as champions for the third time in four years. Tolland was the number one seed going into the contest, though TE had played them tough two times before. And this game was one that didn't disappoint. The game was nip and tuck all night as neither team was able to pull away. In fact, TE trailed by only one after the first quarter and led by one, 26-25 after the second period. In the third quarter, Tolland roared back and grabbed a 41-37 lead heading into the fourth. The Lady Cougars could have wilted away, but they battled their way back into the contest. On their final possession in the quarter, Leighton Edwards hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime with 1.9 seconds to go in the game. "It was such a clutch shot and such an important part of the game," Coach Chandler said. "Everyone stepped up when it counted and Leighton proved she was up to the challenge," he added. In the overtime period, both teams traded buckets to keep the game even. Tolland hit a bucket with 20 seconds to go to take the lead 62-60. TE had two shots to win the game, though they just fell short. "I couldn't be prouder of the girls today," Coach Chandler exclaimed. "They wanted to win the game in the end and we just fell a bit short," he stated. TE was led by Leighton Edwards with 21 points, her career high. Ali Kupec had nine points, while Raegan Burnham and Mackenzie Mason chipped in eight and seven points respectively. Congrats girls in a great season!!!

Hello, Cougars! TE Change Leaders has an update on the Black History Month Hallway Decorating Contest! Instead of making it solely Michael-Jackson themed, we are generalizing it to Black music artists. We felt like this would be easier for you guys to decorate, but we would still love to see Michael Jackson hallways! And, remember: we will be passing out information to all homeroom teachers regarding specific instructions once they register. To register, your team needs to pay 20 dollars total, which goes towards a good cause: The Malta House, a shelter for women and children. We would love to see active participation in this fun contest. The TE Change Leaders will be judging the hallways at the end of the month. Oh, and the best part? The winner of this contest wins a free chill day, with fun activities added in. So get decorating, Cougars, because we're prepared to judge your hard work! Thank you for helping TE Change Leaders change lives, one step at a time!

It took Trumbull six years to complete the project, but it helped solidify Trumbull as a very prominent artist, capturing many of America’s earliest significant moments by way of the paintbrush. Last night, the Lady Cougars finished their regular season with a resounding win over Ellington, 53–7. 12 out of the 14 girls on TE‘s roster were able to contribute in the score column. In fact, Claire Kaminski led all scorers with nine points, her career high. Timothy Edwards awaits their fate of the playoffs going into the weekend with uncertainty. Several games have yet to be reported or played, which leaves TE hanging in the lurch. I fine win to finish out the regular season, however, and good luck in the playoffs.

It’s time for “this date in history.” On February 5, 1919 the United Artists Corporation film studio was created by Hollywood personalities Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith. During the 1900s, several legendary films were released from UA including The African Queen, The Magnificent Seven, West Side Story, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Rocky, and Annie Hall. In 1983 it merged with MGM and was reintroduced independently as United Artists again in 2006.
Also on this date in 1934, Hank Aaron was born and was known for being one of baseball’s most prolific homerun hitters and eventually surpassed Babe Ruth’s record of 714 home runs by hitting a total of 755 in his career. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

The Lady Cougars had their last home game of the season last night falling to the "talons" of the Tolland Lady Falcons 52-43. The game started off hot for the Lady Cougars, which hasn't been the case the last couple of games, as they stormed out to a 7-1 lead. Tolland got back into the quarter however, and the first frame finished all knotted up at 13 apiece. TE was held in check in the second quarter only scoring four points, thus allowing Tolland to take a 22-17 lead going into halftime. However, TE battled back in the third period out scoring Tolland 16-10 to take a 33-32 lead. And man, the place was electric as the quarter ended. In the fourth, Tolland turned it up, or should I say, their two best players took over the game. TE couldn't contain them and were outscored by ten in the final frame. "It was a combative game all around," Coach Chandler stated after the loss. "They have two special players that we just couldn't contain...in fact, they scored 40 of their team's 52 points last night. But we will learn from it and move forward as we hope to see them in the playoffs,' he added. TE was led by the hot shooting of Deeksha Reddy and Mia Leroy who had 13 and 11 points respectively. The Lady Cougars have one game left and then their playoff fate will be determined at the end of the week. Good luck ladies and great job this season thus far!

So get decorating. Thank you for helping TE Change Leaders change lives, one step at a time!

It’s time for “this date in history.” On February 2nd, 1887, the first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This began a long line of “Punxsutawney Phil” groundhogs who have helped signal whether there would be six more weeks of winter if they saw their own shadow or an early spring if they did not. Also on this date in 1913, Grand Central Station in New York City opened, which in addition to being one of the busiest transit sites, is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States. For you baseball fans out there, today in 1876 the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was formed paving the way for an eventual American League to be formed in 1901 and soon after leading to the first World Series in 1903. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
