  • Good morning everyone, please stand for the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Please be seated. Welcome back to another edition of TETV Morning News. Today is Thursday, April 9.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States of America signed a treaty of surrender ending the U.S. Civil War.  On April 9, 1939, opera singer Marian Anderson sang in front of the Lincoln Memorial after being denied the opportunity to sing in a Washington D.C. concert hall due to the color of her skin.  The invitation to sing in front of the Lincoln Memorial came directly from the Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, who stated in his introduction of Anderson on that Easter Sunday that “Genius draws no color line.” On April 9, 1959, NASA introduced America’s first astronauts including John Glenn who would make multiple trips into space. Finally, on April 9, 1965 the Houston Astrodome hosted the first indoor baseball game.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The softball team kicked off their season in impressive fashion yesterday at Suffield Middle School, securing a decisive victory with a commanding performance at the plate and on the field. Every player on the roster saw meaningful playing time, and Arianna Coco made a memorable debut on the mound. Her strong pitching performance clearly impressed Mrs. Giaccone and set the tone for the team's success. Offensively, the Lady Cougars came alive with consistent hitting—singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns kept the momentum rolling throughout the game. It was a well-rounded team effort that showcased what this squad is capable of. Congratulations to the TE softball team on an excellent season-opening win! The Lady Cougars travel to Tolland today for their next matchup. Best of luck out there!

  • The TE baseball team opened up its season on Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 15 to 3 victory over Ellington.  Corbyn Falco led the offensive attack by driving in six runs on three hits.  Falco doubled in the second scoring two, singled in the third scoring two, and doubled in the fourth scoring two.  The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the first inning scoring a run on a wild pitch and an RBI double from Tino Durbois.  Dom Caputa finished with two hits.  Overall, TEMS amassed 10 hits in the game. The Cougars also had a strong eye at the plate, tallying nine walks for the game. Wesley Prather and Grady Moynihan led the team with two walks each.  Zack Powers earned the win for TE. The starter allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out five along the way. Durbois threw one inning of scoreless ball in relief. The next game is scheduled for April 21st vs. Tolland.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On April 6, 1917, the United States officially entered World War One, three years after the conflict originally began.  In pop culture, April 6, 1930 featured the debut of Hostess Twinkies, originally prepared with a banana filling.  The vanilla flavored Twinkies proved so popular that they quickly phased out the original filling.  On April 6, 1980, the American company 3M began selling Post-It Notes in U.S. stores, soon becoming one of the most popular office supply items for thousands of industries.  Finally, on April 6, 2004 the UConn Women’s basketball team won their fifth national title beating the University of Tennessee team.  The previous night, the UConn men’s team also won a national championship by defeating Georgia Tech, the men’s second championship at the time.  The dual victories marked the first time in the history of the NCAA Division I basketball that the same school won both the men’s and women’s titles in the same year.  It has only been repeated one time since then–by UConn once again in 2014.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” A big day for technology.  On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne formed Apple Computer Inc., and it became one of the world’s leading tech companies. On April 1, 2004 Google launched Gmail–by 2009 the number of people using that email service surpassed one billion. In pop culture, on this date in 1891 the Wrigley Company was formed in Chicago, Illinois originally selling items like soap and baking powder.  Wrigley began including packs of gum with baking powder and it became an instant hit–the company began to focus solely on gum and it remains the largest manufacturer of chewing gum in the world. • It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 31, 1776 Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John Adams asking him to “remember the ladies” in reference to the women who were supporting America's fight for independence from Great Britain.  A strong leader herself, Abigail Adams was one of two women to hold the distinction of being married to a president and the mother of another (John Adams was the second president and John Quincy Adams served as the sixth president).  In pop culture, many popular films were released over the years on March 31st including Tommy Boy, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Matrix, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and The Boss Baby.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Hello Cougars! In honor of Women’s History Month this March, we’ve been recognizing one inspiring woman each day. Since we missed a day, today we’re recognizing two incredible women, and this will be our final announcement. First, we honor Chien-Shiung Wu, a physicist who made groundbreaking discoveries in science. We also recognize Nellie Bly, a journalist who exposed injustice and broke barriers. This recognition is compliments of TE Change Leaders. We are collecting donations for Malta House, which supports pregnant women. You can help empower women like those at Malta House by donating to Ms. Bynoe in Room 235. We are proud to have honored these women, even if many weren’t fully recognized during their lifetimes. TE Change Leaders will announce their next initiative soon.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signed a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska for $7 million, about 2 cents an acre.  First nicknamed Seward’s Folly, the acquisition of Alaska as territory would eventually lead to its statehood many decades later.  On March 30, 1919, Igor Sikorsky arrived in the United States.  Sikorsky fled Russia shortly after the Russian Revolution and, after a brief time in Paris, arrived in the United States to pursue his passion of vertical-aircraft.  The eventual landing spot for his company was Stratford, Connecticut. Soon his version of the helicopter would define the industry.  Today the Sikorsky Aircraft corporation is the world’s leading producer of military and commercial helicopters and is one of Connecticut’s most historically significant businesses. And in pop culture, On this date in 1939, Batman first appeared in Detective Comics No. 27. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On March 27, 1775, Thomas Jefferson was elected to the Second Continental Congress.  Considered the primary writer of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson would eventually serve as George Washington’s first U.S. Secretary of State, would serve as John Adams’ Vice President, and then served two terms as President from 1801 - 1809.  On March 27, 1929, President Herbert Hoover was the first president to have a phone installed at their desk in the Oval Office.  On March 27, 1939 the University of Oregon beat The Ohio State University to win the first ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  For the first 12 years of the tournament, only eight teams were invited to the tournament.  Since that time, the tournament eventually grew to its current size of 68 teams receiving an invite and both the men’s and women’s tournament have the same number of invited teams to compete in what is now nicknamed “March Madness.”  Finally, on today’s date in 2005 the popular TV series Grey’s Anatomy debuted for its first season. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On March 18,  1766, the British Parliament repealed the infamous Stamp Act of 1765 after protests by American colonists.  However, on the same day the British Parliament passed the Declaratory Acts stating that the British government had free and total legislative power over the colonies. Alas, that did not turn out well for England.  Switching gears, on this date in 1925, the “Tri-State Tornado”, the deadliest in U.S. history struck eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southern Indiana.  Responsible for nearly 700 deaths, and thousands of injuries, it caused nearly $17 million dollars in damage at the time (roughly $315 million dollars in today’s money).  On a lighter note in pop culture, on this date in 1965 the Pillsbury Doughboy was unveiled and has been in over 600 commercials to date.  Famous birthdays on this date include 24th president Grover Cleveland, singer and actress Queen Latifah, singer Adam Levine, and actress Ciara Bravo. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 2, 1854, tragedy struck the Fales & Gray Car Works factory when a steam boiler exploded causing significant injuries to the workers.  In total, over 20 workers perished and dozens more were injured.  Exactly two months after the accident, the citizens of Hartford voted to establish a public hospital eventually leading to the building of Hartford Hospital in 1859, the first institution of its kind in the greater Hartford area.  It remains one of the area’s major hospitals over 150 years later. In pop culture, on March 2, 1933 the groundbreaking movie King Kong made its world premiere and Warner Brothers’ oldest cartoon character Porky Pig debuted on this date in 1935.  In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a basketball game for the Philadelphia Warriors, a record that still stands today.  Famous birthdays on this date in history include author Dr. Seuss and singer Jon Bon Jovi. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
