  • Teacher Appreciation Week is this week, and it’s time for TEMS to show our thankfulness. Write a letter to your favorite teacher or staff member in the building to show your appreciation and gratitude. Can’t decide? Write two! If your homeroom runs out, grab more at the front office! • It’s time for “this date in history.”  Today’s edition is dedicated to Connecticut’s own Oliver Ellsworth who was born on this date.  Oliver Ellsworth played a critical role in drafting the U.S. Constitution and designing the federal court system including the U.S. Supreme Court.  Ellsworth’s schooling took place at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) and he served as Connecticut’s state attorney for Hartford County.  In 1777, he was elected to the Continental Congress and served there throughout the Revolutionary War.  Along with Connecticut representative Roger Sherman, Ellsworth helped solve the dispute with how states should be represented in the new government by offering the Connecticut Compromise or, more commonly known, as the Great Compromise.  This ultimately led to a bicameral legislative branch with two senators per state for the Senate and a number of representatives in the House based on state population size; a compromise that appealed to both large and small states.  After ratification, Ellsworth was elected as one of Connecticut’s first senators serving from 1789-1796.  In 1796, President Washington nominated Ellsworth to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving for four years before illness forced him to retire.  Ellsworth returned to his home in Windsor and passed away in 1807.  Ellsworth’s legacy includes being considered the  “Founding Father of the Supreme Court.” He was proud to represent Connecticut and was even more proud of his Windsor roots.  The Oliver Ellsworth Homestead Museum can be visited in the town of Windsor. Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  It’s National Superhero Day today–take a moment and reflect on your favorite superhero in your life (real or fiction)!  On April 28, 1788, Maryland became the 7th U.S. state.  In popular culture, on April 28, 2001 American businessman Dennis Tito became the first space tourist when he boarded a Russian supply mission to the International Space Station–the trip cost him approximately $20 million.  On April 28, 2003 Apple launched the iTunes Store providing users the ability to purchase and download music from the internet directly to their iTunes library–in 2010 the store sold its 10 billionth song.  Famous birthdays on this date include the 5th President of the United States James Monroe, author Harper Lee, comedian Jay Leno, and actresses Penelope Cruz and Jessica Alba.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TEMS Cougars softball team had an impressive victory yesterday, crushing Vernon Middle School with a final score of 18-2. The Cougars came out firing right from the start, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone to set the tone for the game. Gabi Nisyrios was the standout performer, driving in four runs and going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Raegan Burnham, Mollie Dumond, Claire Kaminski, and Emma Rutkauskas also contributed multiple hits throughout the game. The Cougars racked up 17 total hits and showed great patience at the plate with 9 walks. On the mound, Emma Rutkauskas pitched a strong start with 6 strikeouts over two innings. Lena Dittrich made her debut and took over in relief and was even more dominant, striking out 9 batters across three innings while not allowing a single hit. The Cougars will look to keep their winning streak alive when they face off against the Illing Rams on Wednesday.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On April 27, 1777 a little known but important American Revolution battle was won in Connecticut–it is known as the Battle of Ridgefield.  Patriot troops drove back British troops and inflicted significant damage to the British side in the only inland battle fought on Connecticut land during the American Revolution.  Ironically, the Patriots were led by Benedict Arnold who would later become famously known as a traitor backing the British cause. Also on this date in 1865, the worst maritime disaster in US History when the steamboat Sultana exploded leading to the loss of approximately 1,700 passengers including many Union soldiers returning home from the Civil War.  In the field of technology, on this date in 1981, Xerox became the first company to include a mouse with its Xerox 8010 Star computer.  Famous birthdays on this date include the 18th President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant and American inventor Samuel Morse.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The TE baseball team travelled to Ellington on Friday and cruised to a 12-2 victory. The win keeps the Cougars' perfect record intact as they move to 4-0 on the year. Elliot Wenzel earned the win as he silenced the Ellington bats, scattering just three hits while racking up seven strikeouts. Offensively the team combined for nine hits and were patient at the plate as they walked fifteen times.  Miles Perez, Grady Moynihan, and Weston Durbois led the hit parade, each recording two hits. When runners were on base, the Cougars didn't miss their opportunities; Corbyn Falco, Dom Caputo, and Moynihan each drove in two runs to power the scoring. Once on base, the Cougars were aggressive, totalling nine stolen bases. The defense was equally impressive, finishing the game with no errors, including a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. The Cougars look to keep the momentum rolling as they return home this Wednesday for a highly anticipated matchup against Illing.

  • Congratulations to all the TEMS Debaters who traveled to Central Middle School in Greenwich on Saturday to compete in the final tournament of the Connecticut Middle School Debate League. AND, in the CHAMPIONSHIP Division, Aarna Jaggi received an individual medal as the 3rd place speaker in a field of 90 championship debaters.  Finally, the team of Ananya Save, Shreenika Patil and Aarna Jaggi were awarded 5th place trophies for their team performance. Pitcher Emma Rutkauskas made an outstanding debut, striking out 13 batters while allowing just 8 hits. Behind the plate, catcher Claire Kaminski played through a mid-game pinky finger injury, while outfielders Mollie Dumon and Isis Hollister provided solid defensive support. TE's bats came alive early, scoring 11 runs in the first inning alone. Lead-off hitter Arianna Coco set the tone with a home run in her first at-bat and finished 2-for-4. Leighton Edwards was a force at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, and single. Claire Kaminski contributed 3 hits including a double, while first baseman Raegan Burnham added a double among her hits. Additional contributions came from Emma Rutkauskas, Isis Hollister, Brooke Dixon, and Lena Dittrich, who ripped a triple in the first inning.  Despite Ellington scoring their only two runs in the first inning, the Lady Cougars' offensive onslaught proved unstoppable. • In baseball action yesterday, the temperature was hovering at a biting 45 degrees.   The TE Cougars’ bats eventually heated up just in time to keep their perfect season alive. The Cougars found themselves in a familiar hole late in the game, trailing 4–2 in the bottom of the 6th inning. With two outs and the pressure mounting, Zach Powers sparked a rally with a sharp single. After Ryan Stead was hit by a pitch to put another runner on, Caysen Lewie stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch game-tying hit, knotting the score at 4–4 and breathing new life into the TE bench.  On the mound, Lyle Dresser pitched effectively in his first start of the season, followed by Wes Prather, who provided key relief innings to keep the Vernon offense in check. However, the game’s most tense moment came in the 6th when Dom Caputo was called in from the bullpen with runners on first and third and only one out. Shortstop Caysen Lewie scooped up a hard-hit grounder and fired to Jacob Zande at second, who turned a textbook double play to end the inning.  The defensive highlights continued into the final frame. In the top of the 7th, Miles Perez shut down a Vernon scoring threat by gunning down a runner at second base as he tried to stretch a single into a double, recording the final out of the inning.  That set the stage for the dramatic finish. In the bottom of the 7th, with the score still deadlocked and Grady Moynihan waiting at third base, Dom Caputo stepped into the box with two outs. Caputo hit a single down the first-base line, scoring Moynihan for the walk-off win and a final score of 5–4.  With the victory, Caputo not only secured the game-winning RBI but also picked up the win on the mound. The Cougars are now a perfect 3–0 on the season. They look to carry this momentum on the road this Friday as they head to Ellington.

  • Yesterday afternoon the TE Cougars Baseball team stunned Tolland in a thrilling comeback. The Cougars found themselves in a 5-0 hole after just two innings. But if the Falcons thought they had it in the bag, they clearly forgot who they were playing.  The momentum shifted the moment Zach Powers stepped onto the mound in relief. Powers was untouchable, tossing 5 scoreless innings and racking up 6 strikeouts. By the time he was done "mowing down the side" in the 7th, he had secured his second win of the year, improving to 2-0 on the season.  Offensively, the Cougars didn't panic; they just started chipping away.  In the bottom of the 2nd, TE got on the board thanks to two passed balls and a clutch RBI groundout from Dennis Yin.  In the 4th trailing by one, Dom Caputo ripped a double into the gap to drive in two runs and give the Cougars their first lead of the day.  In the 5th, Ryan Stead added the insurance runs TE needed when he hit a laser down the third-base line scoring two. Caputo and Wes Prather finished with two hits each.  Defensively, the Cougars flashed the leather all afternoon.  Miles Perez silenced a Falcon rally with an incredible over-the-head, on-the-run catch in right field.  Grady Moynihan called a great game behind the plate and threw out a Tolland runner trying to steal.  The infield was locked in, turning two double plays to keep the bases clear.  Final Score: TE 8, Tolland 5.  Don't miss the action as your undefeated Cougars look to keep the streak alive when they take on Vernon at home today.

Lee of the Confederate States of America signed a treaty of surrender ending the U.S. Civil War.  On April 9, 1939, opera singer Marian Anderson sang in front of the Lincoln Memorial after being denied the opportunity to sing in a Washington D.C. concert hall due to the color of her skin.  The invitation to sing in front of the Lincoln Memorial came directly from the Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, who stated in his introduction of Anderson on that Easter Sunday that “Genius draws no color line.” On April 9, 1959, NASA introduced America’s first astronauts including John Glenn who would make multiple trips into space. Finally, on April 9, 1965 the Houston Astrodome hosted the first indoor baseball game.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • The softball team kicked off their season in impressive fashion yesterday at Suffield Middle School, securing a decisive victory with a commanding performance at the plate and on the field. Every player on the roster saw meaningful playing time, and Arianna Coco made a memorable debut on the mound. Her strong pitching performance clearly impressed Mrs. Giaccone and set the tone for the team's success. Offensively, the Lady Cougars came alive with consistent hitting—singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns kept the momentum rolling throughout the game. It was a well-rounded team effort that showcased what this squad is capable of. Congratulations to the TE softball team on an excellent season-opening win! The Lady Cougars travel to Tolland today for their next matchup. Best of luck out there!

  • The TE baseball team opened up its season on Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 15 to 3 victory over Ellington.  Corbyn Falco led the offensive attack by driving in six runs on three hits.  Falco doubled in the second scoring two, singled in the third scoring two, and doubled in the fourth scoring two.  The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the first inning scoring a run on a wild pitch and an RBI double from Tino Durbois.  Dom Caputa finished with two hits.  Overall, TEMS amassed 10 hits in the game. • It’s time for “this date in history.”  On April 6, 1917, the United States officially entered World War One, three years after the conflict originally began.  In pop culture, April 6, 1930 featured the debut of Hostess Twinkies, originally prepared with a banana filling.  The vanilla flavored Twinkies proved so popular that they quickly phased out the original filling.  On April 6, 1980, the American company 3M began selling Post-It Notes in U.S. stores, soon becoming one of the most popular office supply items for thousands of industries.  Finally, on April 6, 2004 the UConn Women’s basketball team won their fifth national title beating the University of Tennessee team.  The previous night, the UConn men’s team also won a national championship by defeating Georgia Tech, the men’s second championship at the time.  The dual victories marked the first time in the history of the NCAA Division I basketball that the same school won both the men’s and women’s titles in the same year.  It has only been repeated one time since then–by UConn once again in 2014.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 31, 1776 Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John Adams asking him to “remember the ladies” in reference to the women who were supporting America's fight for independence from Great Britain.  A strong leader herself, Abigail Adams was one of two women to hold the distinction of being married to a president and the mother of another (John Adams was the second president and John Quincy Adams served as the sixth president).  In pop culture, many popular films were released over the years on March 31st including Tommy Boy, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Matrix, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and The Boss Baby.  Thanks for listening to this date in history.

  • Hello Cougars! In honor of Women’s History Month this March, we’ve been recognizing one inspiring woman each day. After a few days without announcements last week, we’re excited to recognize four incredible women today. First, we honor Dolores Huerta, who fought for workers’ rights and helped improve conditions for farmworkers. We also recognize Junko Tabei, the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Next, we honor Bessie Coleman, the first Black and Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Finally, we recognize Sybil Ludington, a young heroine who rode through the night to warn troops during the American Revolution. This recognition is compliments of TE Change Leaders. We are collecting donations for Malta House, which supports pregnant women by providing housing and care. You can help empower women like those at Malta House by donating to Ms. Bynoe in Room 235.
