  • Cassidy's Cultural Corner - Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday.  Its name comes from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) placed in front of homes.  The festival celebrates the Hindu New Year.  It is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness and the triumph of good over evil.

Diwali takes place every year in late October or early November, depending on the cycle of the moon. The festival starts two days before the new moon comes up.  In 2020, the Diwali celebrations go from November 12 through the 16.

  • Purple Week - Grade 6/Day 2 - Grade 7 and 8/Day 1
  • In Flanders Field Read by Eve Lagasse

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  • We wrap up National French Week with some information about the Eiffel Tower. The man whose name is on the tower DIDN’T actually design it! Gustave Eiffel’s company won a competition to design the main attraction for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. Eiffel won the naming rights even though he didn’t actually design it! The Eiffel Tower was meant to be temporary. A lot of French people thought it was ugly and wanted it taken down. But it had a radio antenna and telegraph transmitter built in, and it was so useful, the French government left it up. You can find a small apartment within the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel used to entertain guests, such as Thomas Edison, there. There’s also a post office, so you can buy a postcard and mail it right from the tower. The Eiffel Tower actually moves. Its 7500 tons of iron gridwork can sway in strong winds, and it can expand and contract up to 7 inches due to heat and cold. There are 72 names of scientists and engineers engraved in the iron. Over 300 million people have visited the tower since it opened, and around 7 million visitors a year still come to enjoy the view from the observation decks. You can climb to the top, if you want to climb the 1,665 steps. Most people take the elevator! The Eiffel Tower shows up in videos, movies, and video games. Here’s a video where “The Iron Lady” stands tall -Smile Best, by Austin Brown.
