  • Purple Week - Grade 6/Day 2 - Grade 7 and 8/Day 1
  • In Flanders Field Read by Eve Lagasse

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  • We wrap up National French Week with some information about the Eiffel Tower. The man whose name is on the tower DIDN’T actually design it! Gustave Eiffel’s company won a competition to design the main attraction for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. Eiffel won the naming rights even though he didn’t actually design it! The Eiffel Tower was meant to be temporary. A lot of French people thought it was ugly and wanted it taken down. But it had a radio antenna and telegraph transmitter built in, and it was so useful, the French government left it up. You can find a small apartment within the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel used to entertain guests, such as Thomas Edison, there. There’s also a post office, so you can buy a postcard and mail it right from the tower. The Eiffel Tower actually moves. Its 7500 tons of iron gridwork can sway in strong winds, and it can expand and contract up to 7 inches due to heat and cold. There are 72 names of scientists and engineers engraved in the iron. Over 300 million people have visited the tower since it opened, and around 7 million visitors a year still come to enjoy the view from the observation decks. You can climb to the top, if you want to climb the 1,665 steps. Most people take the elevator! The Eiffel Tower shows up in videos, movies, and video games. Here’s a video where “The Iron Lady” stands tall -Smile Best, by Austin Brown.

  • Here’s a moment of French culture as we continue National French Week. You have probably never heard of Carole Fredericks. That’s OK, not many Americans have. Carole Fredericks grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, one of six children, and attended Springfield public schools. After graduating, she asked her brother, the Grammy-winning blues artist Taj Mahal, to bring her to California to be a backup singer. At the age of 20, while working as a waitress in a French restaurant, she was urged by customers to travel to France to perform there. Even though she didn’t speak French at all, she took the chance and flew to Paris. As luck would have it, she met the owner of that restaurant at the airport in Paris. He called friends, and she began singing professionally immediately. She sang with many famous musicians, including Elton John, Eric Clapton, and  Celine Dion. The album she recorded with Celine Dion remains the best selling French language album of all time. For six years, she was one third of the trio “Fredericks Goldman Jones”. Eventually, she began writing and performing her own music, and toured internationally. At the time of her death in Senegal, at the age of 49, she was considered “music royalty” in the French-speaking world. She was active in supporting causes such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Jean-Jacques Goldman said of her:

Carole was born once in the United States, the land of her parents, of her childhood, of her formation, of her musical culture. She was born a second time in France, the land of her artistic recognition, of her loves and friends, of her pleasures, of her home. Yet a third time she was born in Senegal, the land of her roots, of her heart, perhaps the place where she felt best, the land of her departure, as well.”

  • Cougar Week Day 3
  • November is National Native American Heritage Month.  Native American Heritage Month offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the Indigenous Peoples' cultures, traditions, and languages throughout the Western Hemisphere.  In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, we’d like to acknowledge and honor the Podunk peoples and the homeland that we gather on daily when we attend our schools, as students, staff, and a community.  This land acknowledgement is something that is traditionally done by indigenous peoples to honor their territories and land as a way to pay respect to the history and tradition of their ancestors.

  • Last spring, you may remember Mrs. Morgan-Hostetler coming on the air to talk about recent events that were taking place in our country and how TE was looking for students who were interested in helping our community engage in conversations about racism, the role of race in our society and student activism. We are looking to continue that group and add other students who are interested in brainstorming ideas on changes we can make at TE to be more inclusive and understanding of all who are part of our community. If you are interested, please join the “Make a Change” classroom using code:  c23gpkr Please do this by Tuesday, November 3rd.  In the classroom, you will find information about our first meeting. If you are unsure of what this will be about, join the class, come to our first meeting and then decide if it is right for you.
