• In case you didn’t hear, we will be having Ryan Parker visit our school on Monday, February 24th!!! Who is Ryan Parker you ask? He is a Manchester based poet who has been influenced by the strength, wisdom and humor of his mom, love for hip hop and people.  Because of his personal frustrations with his own educational experiences as a kid, Ryan  promised himself he would  bring golden noise into education to make it fun and empower youth to have a voice. Be ready for some high energy fun, and who knows, maybe you’ll find out you are interested in something you never gave any thought to!

• Attention Baseball Players: There will be a mandatory, informational baseball meeting on Wednesday, February 26th for those interested in trying out for the Timothy Edwards Middle School Baseball Team.  The meeting will take place in room 121 immediately after school and end at 3:30 PM.  Plan on getting picked up at 3:30 PM or take the 4 pm late bus home. Once again, the meeting will take place on February 26th.

• Attention Athletes!  Spring Sports Registration in Power School Parent Portal is now open!! You will not be able to try out unless Registration is complete! The deadline is Friday, March 6th. Spring sports include baseball, softball and track and field. Any questions see Mr. S in the gym or Mrs. Stewart in the Main Office.

• Elijah McCoy - 1844 - 1929 (Inventor) - The son of former slaves from Kentucky who reached Canada on the Underground Railroad, Elijah McCoy was able to attend school in Edinburgh, Scotland to study mechanical engineering.  He had 57 patents, mostly working to improve steam engines, but never made much money for himself.  Others used Mr. McCoy’s inventions in theirs, making them millionaires.  His oil-drip cup invention was so amazing that people developed the term “The Real McCoy” to mean something original and of high quality.

Ryan is a motivational speaker who promotes peace-building and confidence-building.  Influenced by hip hop music, he uses his poetry to empower youth. Parker is described as  "a linguistic gourmet chef that chooses words to create a delicacy for the reader to consume and digest until full from pure poetic sustenance."  We are very excited to bring Ryan to speak with all of you. • Shirley Chisholm - 1924 - 2005
  Politician & Educator

The first African-American woman elected to Congress in 1968, serving New York’s 12th district for seven terms was Shirley Chisholm. Shirley Chisholm was also the first African-American candidate for a major political party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1972.  Ms. Chisholm was a defender of public school systems, working to secure and preserve funding for inner city schools, especially in her district of Brooklyn.  In 1993, Ms. Chisholm was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.  In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

• As February is Black History Month, TE would like to recognize influential African Americans throughout our country's history.  Today's subject is Benjamin Banneker, an inventor and architect. As a free and self-taught African-American who took over his family's farm at the age of 15, Benjamin Bannecker is known for inventing the first clock in America in the 1750s.  Mr. Banneker was a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, and wrote to him discussing the topics of slavery and racial equality.  He is best known for designing and surveying the area for what is now the nation's capital in Washington D.C. in 1791 after the lead architect quit, saving the project.   Stay tuned for more biographies throughout the month!

• Congratulations to the Timothy Edwards Middle School Jazz Ensemble who traveled to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the National Jazz Festival!  After taking in the scenery and running up the very steps once run by Rocky Balboa, the band competed at the National Jazz Festival earning a strong 2nd Place finish which ended up being only one point behind the first place winner.  Eighth grade trumpet soloist Rohan Pruthi was named the top middle school musician for the entire festival! Congratulations to everyone who participated!

• The boys basketball team knocked off Illing Middle School 62-45 at Manchester yesterday afternoon.  A tough half court defense kept the Rams stifled for most of the game and a strong transition offense pushed the Cougars to the victory in the semifinals of the playoffs.  The boys play East Hartford at East Hartford on Wednesday at 3:30 for the league championship.

• The boys basketball team best Tolland yesterday 54-49.  A strong defense of effort lead to the victory. The Cougars ended the regular season with a nine and three record. The boys play Illing on Monday in the first round of the playoffs.

• The Lady Cougars finished their season on a high last night beating the Falcons of Tolland 38 to 18. Reagan Heafy-Deangelis had a game-high 12 points, while Cassie Polanski and Nour Abunasra had six and 5 respectively. Sharon Iweka chipped in four points while Erin Martin,  Emerson Iacovelli, Catherine Downes and Caitlin Bullock each had a bucket. The Lady Cougars won their first and last game of the season, both against Tolland. A special shout-out to all the 8th graders: Captain Reagan Heafy-DeAngelis, Huntyr Courtois, Nour Abunasra, Emerson Iacovelli, Morgan Reed, and Catherine Downes for all their hard work this season.  Good luck in high school girls.

• The boys basketball team beat JFK yesterday 71-59 in Enfield.  JFK stayed close throughout the game, but some key steals that led to some easy baskets and free throws pushed the lead to double digits late in the fourth. The Cougars are 8-3 heading into the final regular season game is Thursday at TE against Tolland. 

• The Lady Cougars played their final home game of the season last night, falling to the Lady Patriots of JFK 40-29.  Reagan Heafey-DeAngelis led the Lady Cougars with 9 points while Nour Abunasra finished with seven. Avery Brochu and Cassie Polansky chipped in 4 points a piece, while Brooke Stapleton and Sharon Iweka had 3 and 2 points respectively.  The Lady Cougars were down at halftime, but clawed their way back into the game.  The lead was just too much to overcome in the final minutes.  The Lady Cougars travel to Tolland on Thursday for their final regular season game of the 19-20 season.
