• The Lady Cougars played their game this season last Friday falling to the Illing Rams, 26-22.  The Lady Cougars were led by Lexie Wheeler with a game high 12 points.  Maria Galley added seven, while Anna Matus hit a three pointer to round out the scoring.  It was the last game for the 8th graders as well.  Coach Chandler would like to thank the two captains, Lexie and Maria as well as the remaining 8th graders, Bridget Doherty, Carly Pitruzzello, Ella Suppicich, Haydin Courtois, and Anna Kim for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.  The Lady Cougars finished their season 5 and 7, with wins against Ellington, Tolland (twice) and JFK (twice).  Great job ladies.

• Good morning. My name is Olivia  and I'm reporting for Sage Team student Kayla Cyr who chose to recognize Rosa Parks as her honorary pick for Black History month.

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama and she became a civil rights activist who is best known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. 

She attended the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls and then Alabama State Teacher's College in order to try and get her high school diploma. Unfortunately, Rosa's education was cut short when her mother became very ill. Rosa left school to care for her mother. A few years later, Rosa met her husband, Raymond Parks, a successful barber. 

Rosa worked part time jobs and went back to school, finally earning her high school diploma. During this time, the city of Montgomery was segregated. This meant that things were different for white people and black people. They had different schools, different churches, different stores, different elevators, and even different drinking fountains. Places often had signs saying: "For Colored Only" or "For Whites Only". When Rosa would ride the bus to work, she would have to sit in the back in the seats marked "for colored". Sometimes she would have to stand even if there were seats open up front. 

Growing up, Rosa had lived with racism in the south. She was scared of the members of the KKK who had burned down black school houses and churches. She also saw a black man get beaten by a white bus driver for getting in his way. Rosa and her husband Raymond wanted to do something about it. They joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). 

On December 1, 1955, Rosa made her famous stand (while sitting) on the bus. Rosa had settled in her seat on the bus after a hard day's work. All the seats on the bus had filled up when a white man boarded. The bus driver told Rosa and some other African-Americans to stand up. Rosa refused. The bus driver said he would call the police. Rosa didn't move and was arrested and charged with breaking a segregation law. She refused to pay her fine of $10, however, saying that she was not guilty and that the law was illegal. She appealed to a higher court. That night a number of African-American leaders got together and decided to boycott the city buses. This meant that African-Americans would no longer ride the buses. One of these leaders was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr..

It wasn't easy for people to boycott the buses as many African-Americans didn't have cars. They had to walk to work or get a ride in a carpool. Many people couldn't go into town to buy things. However, they stuck together in order to make a statement. The boycott continued for 381 days! Finally, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the segregation laws in Alabama were unconstitutional. 

Just because the laws were changed, things didn't get any easier for Rosa. She received many threats and feared for her life. Many of the civil rights leader's houses were bombed, including the home of Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1957, Rosa and Raymond moved to Detroit, Michigan where she continued to attend civil rights meetings. She died on October 24, 2005 but she was a symbol to many African-Americans of the fight for equal rights and is still a symbol of freedom and equality to many today. Rosa Parks was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

• Good Morning, I am Rachael Richard, I am a student on Sage team and my honorary pick to recognize for black history month is Eartha Kitt. I chose her because she inspired me.
  

Starting from a simple life in poverty, she battled her way through life to a great life as a actress, dancer, and singer. She was born on January, 17, 1927, in South Carolina. She was given away by her mother at the age of nine and went to live in Harlem. Quitting high school at age 15, she went to work in a factory in Brooklyn. However, she didn’t have a home. She lived in her friend’s homes and in the subways.

Though, by the 1950’s, she had finally sung and danced her way out of poverty. Now in the spotlight, she performed with Katherine Dunham on a European tour, and also performed solos at a Paris Nightclub. She became the talk of the continent. Orson Welles started calling her, “The most exciting girl in the world.” She also spoke out on hardships and issues. Finally, she took over the final season of the TV series Batman, replacing Julie Newmar. Sadly, on Christmas Day in 2008, she died of colon cancer in her own home in Weston, Connecticut.

As you can see, despite her great deal of hardships, she battled into the spotlight became the talk of the continent and the most exciting person in the world. Please join me in keeping Eartha Kitt’s memory alive today.

• Many of you may be wondering who Alice Walker is. Alice Walker is a Pulitzer prize-winning, African-American novelist and poet most famous for authoring “The Color Purple.”She was the first African American to ever win a Pulitzer Prize.
  

Alice Walker was born to sharecropper parents in Eatonton, Georgia, in 1944. Alice Malsenior Walker was born on February 9, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. The youngest daughter of sharecroppers, she grew up poor, with her mother working as a maid to help support the family's eight children.When Alice walker was eight years old, she was shot in the right eye with a BB pellet while playing with two of her brothers.There was a whitish scar tissue formed in her damaged eye, and she became self-conscious and blind on her right eye. But this didn’t slow her down; living in the racially divided South, Walker showcased a bright mind at her segregated schools, graduating from high school as class valedictorian. She continued her education at Wellesley College and went on to work as a social worker, teacher and lecturer, and took part in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi for equality for African Americans. She also won an American Book Award. She and her husband, Melvyn Leventhal, were the first legally interracial married couple in Mississippi.The two had one daughter, Rebecca, before divorcing in 1976.

Alice Walker is one of the most admired African-American writers working today.  Alice Walker has influenced Jean Toomer, (a black poet from Chicago) Bessie Head, (writer from South Africa) and Flannery O'Connor (a white writer from Georgia. 

In 1985, Walker's story made it to the big screen: Steven Spielberg directed The Color Purple, which starred Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, as well as Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. The following year, she delivered her first children's book, Langston Hughes: American Poet. Walker also emerged as a prominent voice in the black feminist movement. According to Walker's website, her books have been translated into more than two dozen languages and sold more than 15 million copies. Walker has been honored with the O. Henry Award and the Mahmoud Darwish Literary Prize for Fiction. Additionally, she was inducted into the California Hall of Fame in 2006 and received the Lennon Ono Peace Award in 2010.Alice Walker is a Great African American.

• Good morning. I am Lindsey Alemany. And I am Alex Suchecka. And we are students from the Sage Team. As you know it is Black History Month, so we decided to choose Oprah Winfrey as our honorary pick.  We selected Oprah Winfrey because she is an amazing woman and she inspires people all around the world.
  

Oprah Winfrey is an American media owner, talk show host, actress, producer, and contributor. She was born in Mississippi on January 29th, 1954. 

Winfrey said her father saved her life. He was very strict and provided her with guidance, structure, rules, and books. He required his daughter to complete weekly book reports, and she went without dinner until she learned five new vocabulary words each day.

Winfrey became an excellent student, participating as well in the drama club, debate club, and student council. In an Elks Club speaking contest, she won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. The following year she was invited to a White House Conference on Youth. 

Oprah also became the world's first female black billionaire and the richest self-made American woman. Did you know that Oprah had a net worth over $2 billion in 2013! She was crowned Miss Black Tennessee while in college and began co-anchoring the evening news when she was nineteen. Oprah has always struggled with her weight, so in 2015 she made $300 million on her Weight Watchers investment. Oprah launched “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1986 as a nationally controlled program. The show grossed $125 million in the first year. In 2009, she announced that she would be ending her program when her contract with ABC ended, in 2011.  In January of 2018, she became the first African-American woman to be honored with the Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille award. Oprah states “So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon”,. Oprah Winfrey is such an inspiring, kind-hearted woman and we would love to recognize her today

• Hi, I am India Patel and I am a student from the Sage Team. My honorary pick for Black History Month is Louis Armstrong.
  

I selected him because he is so inspiring. Despite his difficult childhood, he used his talents to make something of himself. Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 4, 1901. As a youngster, he did not have an easy life. His parents separated when he was five and he lived with his sister, mother, and grandmother in a rundown area of New Orleans known as "the Battlefield" because of the gambling, drunkenness, fighting, and shooting that frequently occurred there.

In his later teens and early twenties, Armstrong organized a band in Chicago and began to record one of the greatest series in the history of jazz. These Hot Five  and Hot Seven  recordings show his skill and experimentation with the trumpet. During these years, Armstrong was working with big bands in Chicago clubs and theaters. His vocals, featured on most records after 1925, are an extension of his trumpet playing and are delivered in a unique throaty style. He was also the inventor of scat singing (the random use of nonsense syllables), which originated after he dropped his sheet music while recording a song and could not remember the lyrics!

By 1929, Armstrong was in New York City leading a nightclub band. Appearing in the theatrical revue Hot Chocolates, he sang "Ain't Misbehavin'," his first popular song hit. The public had come to think of Louis Armstrong as a light, often comic performer in his later years. But there were still occasions when he produced well-crafted, brilliant music. He died in New York City on July 6, 1971, at the age of 70.

Louis Armstrong is still remembered today for his talents as a trumpet player, singer, and his Number 1 hits:  Hello Dolly & What A Wonderful  World.  Please join me today in keeping his memory alive.

• It's two in a row for the Lady Cougars as they battled the Falcons from Tolland last night in a CRAL matchup. The Lady Cougars pressed their way to Victory 40-33. Maria Galley led all scorers with 13 points. Lexie wheeler had 9, while Ava Magarian and Anna Matus added 7 and six respectively. Not only did Jada Reyes-Tran and Haydin Courtois get on the board on offense, Jada with 2 layups and Haydin a free throw, they were defensive stallworths as well grabbing rebounds and keeping their hands in the passing lanes. Nour Abunasra, Carly Pitruzzello, Anna Kim, Morgan Reed and Olivia Petgrave hussled throughout and caused havoc as well. Ella Suppucich and Bridget Doherty moved the ball well on offense. The Lady Cougars now have 6 days off before their next game when they travel to Ellington to take on the Wildcats. The last game of the season is next Friday against Illing. Hope you can come out and cheer on the girls.

• The Lady Cougars are back to their winning ways after taking down the JFK Patriots 35-27.  The Cougs were led by Maria Galley with 11 points, and Lexie Wheeler had 10.  Ava Magarian had a big 6 points in a starting role while Haydin Courtois, Olivia Petgrave, Bridget Doherty chipped in 4, 2 and 2 points respectively.  Stepping up on the defensive end were Ella Suppicich, Jada Reyes-Tran, Morgan Reed and Reagan H-D.  "This was a great team win," Coach Chandler said.  "Everyone contributed both on and off the court.  They worked hard and the win was the correct result," he added.  The Lady Cougars travel to Tolland today to take on the Eagles in another CRAL match-up.  Congratulations ladies.
