  • Continuing our spotlight on Black History Month, today we feature Katherine Johnson. The pioneering NASA mathematician whose story was told in the film "Hidden Figures," Ms. Johnson was essential in developing the math necessary to successfully and safely launch rockets to get astronauts to space, and the moon.  Ms. Johnson fought against sexist and segregational policies to become a trailblazing mathematician.   Ms. Johnson was honored by NASA with naming the Katherine Johnson Computational Research Facility, a facility at NASA's Langley Research Center in her honor. For her many contributions, Johnson was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian award, by President Barack Obama in 2015.  Ms. Johnson died Monday at the age of 101.
