TE Morning News - February 24, 2020
  • Hello Timothy Edwards students, it is my pleasure to tell you a little bit about the Black History Month display currently in our school main lobby.  On display is an authentic game jersey worn by legendary hockey player Grant Fuhr.  Grant Fuhr was the NHL's first black goaltender who was arguably the best goalie to ever play the game.  With his incredible athletic ability, Grant Fuhr became the first black man to win a Stanley Cup and would go on to win five Stanley Cups throughout his career.  The jersey on display is the actual jersey he wore to win the 1984 Stanley Cup over the New York Islanders.  After a tremendous career, Grant Fuhr would go on to be the first black man ever inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and was also named as one of the top 100 hockey players of all time during the NHL's 100th anniversary season.  If you take a moment to look up close at the jersey display you might see a dark mark on the right sleeve.  Look closely at the picture next to it and you will see the very same mark.  Collector's of sports memorabilia call this a photo match which helps to prove the authenticity of the item.  I hope you will stop and take a nice look at this piece of history as we celebrate Black History Month.
